Land Acknowledgment
On This Land
I live and work in Lakeland, Florida, on the ancestral and traditional lands of the Seminole, and before them the Calusa, Tocobaga, and other Indigenous peoples whose histories on this land predate and exceed the colonial record. The Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida are sovereign nations whose members continue to live, work, and govern in Florida today.
I acknowledge that the research I do from this place is shaped by the land I live on, and that this land is also a site of ongoing colonial violence and racial violence whose official record is incomplete. This acknowledgment is a beginning, not an end.
